Where does Schedule C go on Form 1040?
Schedule 1 (Form 1040), Line 3
You do not copy Schedule C onto Form 1040 directly — the whole Schedule C attaches to your return, and its result flows through. Your net profit or loss from Schedule C Line 31 goes to Schedule 1 (Form 1040), Part I, Line 3. The Schedule 1 total then flows to Form 1040 Line 8 as additional income. Separately, a net profit of $400 or more also goes to Schedule SE to calculate self-employment tax, which lands on Schedule 2 and Form 1040 as a tax, with half of it coming back as an adjustment on Schedule 1.
Examples
- A $47,500 net profit appears on Schedule 1 Line 3, then inside Form 1040 Line 8.
- Self-employment tax on that profit is calculated on Schedule SE and reported on Schedule 2.
- Half of the self-employment tax is deducted back on Schedule 1, Part II.
Watch out for
- E-filed returns handle the attachment automatically; the flow still happens behind the scenes.
- Multiple businesses mean multiple Schedule Cs, combined on one Schedule 1 Line 3.
- Quarterly estimated tax payments during the year prevent a surprise bill on this income.
